You hardly need a recipe for this classic ending to an Italian meal. Affogato means “drowned” in Italian, so this dish is simply a scoop or two of gelato drowned in espresso. You can get creative by using different gelato flavors—chocolate or salted caramel come to mind. If you want to add a little crunch, try breaking up one of those amaretti cookies that come in pretty wrappers and put the crumbles on top.

A traditional Italian affogato pairs creamy vanilla gelato with a shot of hot espresso for an effortlessly elegant dessert. Add amaretti crumbles for a crunchy finish.
Put 1–2 scoops of the gelato into a small bowl and pour a freshly made shot of espresso over the top. Garnish with amaretti crumbles if desired. Serve immediately.
