Homemade Heritage

When you’re on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail and you drive by the landmark Garey Store near Santa Maria, you may be passing by a treasure trove that’s just across the street. On the last Sunday of every month, you’ll find the outpost of a micro farmstand and bakeshop inside a refurbished vintage wardrobe. Inside it’s stocked with delicious baked goods and other locally sourced products, put together by Garey resident Elizabeth Nunez. Nunez made the switch to whole foods and home cooking when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. She makes naturally leavened bread with a multi-day ferment that is not only delicious but more easily digestible, even for those with a gluten allergy like hers. Now, she makes her sourdough-based baked goods available across the North County as pop-ups. Her lineup includes cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, bagels and flavored bread like jalapeño cheddar or chocolate chip, plus the simple country loaf that started it all. Find her at spots like the Old Town Orcutt Farmers Market (which operates through October), and every weekend at Bien Nacido Winery. Sometimes she ventures down to Mujeres Makers Market in Santa Barbara, when she’s not juggling her other full-time role as a first-grade teacher. Sign up at hotplate.com/homemadeheritage to stay in the loop on her next appearance and send in your preorders.
Visit the enchanting wardrobe at 4269 Wicks St., Santa Maria, on the last Sunday of each month, 9am–noon.
Rosminah Brown
Rosminah Brown is a Santa Barbara native who types fast and eats slow. She once jumped in the Neptune Pool at Hearst’s Castle. She is still upset that JR’s BBQ closed. She is always seeking a perfect, singular, exquisite bite of food.
