Once a daring venture by two friends, it’s now one of the region’s most distinctive vineyards, celebrated for Rhône varieties like Grenache, Syrah, and Picpoul.

Winemakers across Santa Barbara County are drawn to its character and complexity—the kind of fruit that tells a story of risk, vision, and place.

September is California Wine Month! In 1973 Marsha

September is California Wine Month! In 1973 Marshall Ream planted a vineyard on a plateau near the headwaters of Zaca Creek. It wasn’t long before he recognized the value of making wine from their grape harvest, and he brought in a young recent enology school graduate named Ken Brown as the first winemaker of Zach Mesa Winery.

Over the course of 40 vintages, a slew of winemakers, assistant winemakers, enologists, lab techs, cellar rats, vineyard managers and vineyard workers have made valuable contributions to Zaca Mesa. In turn, the winery has offered them a place to learn, innovate and hone their craft—becoming a launching pad for many illustrious winemaking careers.

Zaca Mesa alumni recall the early days, camaraderie, and winemaking that shaped SantaBarbara's wine scene.

Summer in Santa Barbara is about sun-soaked days and the freshest local flavors. Think juicy tomatoes, sweet corn, stone fruit, and farmers market finds that make every meal a celebration of the season. ☀️

🌽 Bossie’s Kitchen, @bossieskitchen.sb : Home of Old Bossy the cow (~1940 - 2020). This neighborhood restaurant is open for lunch and dinner with indoor and patio dining. Their produce is always sourced from the Santa Barbara Farmer’s Market!

🍑 It’s National Peach Month, and you need a summer peach with ricotta honey and arugula pizza pie at St. Bibiana, @st.bibiana on Ortega Street.
