Eat Local Challenge #2

It’s Day 2 of the Challenge!

Getting it written down.

Goals and challenges are always easier when they’re neatly written down on your favorite notepad, right? Doesn’t everyone love a good To-Do list? Instead of a To-Do list of chores for the month, let’s create a list of foodie-friendly goals for the month of October and keep track of our progress along the way. Now that we’ve cleaned out our pantries, it’s time to get down to business and set a few intentions and parameters for this Challenge. Let’s get inspired by determining objectives for ourselves to accomplish. Then over time, we can jot down all of the progress we’ve made, dishes we’ve devoured and recipes we’ve discovered.

You can keep this diary to yourself or, even better, share your progress and exciting finds with the rest of the Eat Local Challenge community. Let’s get writing! I’ve got some tips that will make this project easy.


Today’s Assignment:

Start a Food Diary

Take 10 minutes today to think about what you want to get out of this month of local goodness. Find your favorite notebook (paper or digital) and start a list of goals and guidelines for the month. It can be a simple list or it can be an artistic expression—it’s completely up to you.

Throughout the month of October, write down (or type out) any surprisingly local products you’ve stumbled upon, your favorite spots to buy local groceries and the tastiest restaurants that serve local food. Keep track of all of the local goodies you are feeding your body and how your body is thanking you for it.

Will you stick to buying food produced within a 100-mile radius of your home, 200 miles, within the tri-county region, or within the entire state? Decide if you’re going to make any exceptions during the challenge such as coffee, tea (although both are being produced right here in the Santa Barbara County), spices, etc. And try to stick to these—the goal is to stay as local as possible and to challenge yourself. But don’t make it impossible for yourself. You might also print out this Santa Barbara fall local foods list and stick it in your notebook or tape it to your kitchen cabinet. Keep this as a reference throughout the Challenge.

Each day (or as often as you can) for the rest of the Challenge jot down what you eat in your notebook or app on your phone. List breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks. Don’t forget beverages, too. Use it as encouragement to stick to your local meals—it will be gratifying to look back and see all the delicious, fresh and local goodness you treated yourself to. Don’t be shy—share your accomplishments, challenges and goals with others below!
