Eat Local Challenge #16

Beyond Food

It’s time to think outside the box.

This Eat Local Challenge is all about food. But this weekend I’d like to encourage you to take it a step further. What other products could you be sourcing locally?

Do you shop local for things like clothes, gifts or how about locally produced cleaning supplies or skin care products?

Let’s take a moment to think about how we could support our local businesses or create our own products. I’ve even got some recipes to share with you. Let’s go!

Weekend Assignment:

Beyond Food

So far this Challenge has (hopefully) encouraged you to expand your horizons regarding local food—shopping, eating, cooking, sharing, enjoying. What we sometimes forget is that local ingredients don’t always have to be eaten; it could be interesting to expand our scope beyond food to include clothes, gifts, cleaning products, skin care products and more.

This weekend buy or DIY something that you wouldn’t normally get locally. You can look for soaps and candles at the farmers market. Look for artisan products or clothing made locally. Or make your own cleaning supplies or skin care products.

In Santa Barbara, we are fortunate to have The Grapeseed Company founded by Kristin Fraser Cotte, who makes skin care products from local grapeseeds and grapeseed oil. In an article by Nancy Oster, Kristin shared these three recipes that you can easily make for yourself:

• Honey Brown Sugar Lip Scrub

• Luscious Lavender Almond Honey Facial

• Chocolate Scrub

And if you don’t have time to make them yourself, you can visit her shop in person or online.

Don’t forget to share your homemade products or finds with #EatLocalChallenge2017!
